What is Folk Art?

Art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring trades people. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily down-to-earth, functional and decorative rather than purely aesthetic. Folk art expresses cultural identity by conveying shared community values and ideas of beauty. It encompasses a range of practical and decorative media, including cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal and more. If traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms. Folk art reflects traditional art forms of diverse community groups, ethnic, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age or gender based — who identify with each other and society at large.

  6. Working with julius was very exiting. It was cool to be able to work with a pro. He taught us how to stroke our brush when we paint and he was very patient with us. After we finished a painting we would have a critique which is when we talk about our art in front of other people. I liked working with him and it was an experience that I'll never forget! :)

  7. Hey, I am the talented Carlotta Stanford Gill. I am a local artist in Chicago. I run an open Art Studio, at the Carole Robertson Center for Learning. March 29th - April 1st, we were graced by Julius Lyles, this was an amazing experience. Slideshow of other FolkArt Artist, Angelia Thompson work really made an impression on the children. The children spent many hours sketching ideas, chatting amongst each other about their work. It was a smooth transition to view the children's process< very impressive! we will continue to blog blog blog
